Sumo great Konishiki sponsors a charitable foundation, Konishiki Kids, which currently is helping children from the area of Japan devastated by 2011's eartquake and tsunami
A friend of mine, Scott McCaskie (and son Taiyo) helps out, and during the summer of 2012 we were selling shaved ice in a local park and donating the proceeds to the
charity.
On Sept 29, 2012, a final event was held attended by Konishiki himself. He and his crew made chankonabe, the tradtional food of sumo wrestlers (a sort of stew made
with chicken and lots of vegetables), and sold it to raise money. In addition, our group sold burgers, hot dogs, shaved ice, and other food. Wine (with a Konishiki Kids
label) was also sold.
